FidoNet was started in the early 1980's by Tom Jennings in San Francisco, California and some friends of his who lived in Baltimore, Maryland. Initially, communications consisted of simple messages going back and forth bewteen these systems. Tom's Fido software was the next step in allowing a BBS (Bulletin Board System) to exist in the network and. at FidoNet's peak in the 1990's, some 30,000 systems communicated worldwide in the FidoNet network.
